International Turfgrass Society President Han Liebao to Speak at Thailand Conference

Han_liebaoProfessor Han Liebao will give a presentation about Asia Turfgrass and Golf at next week's Sustainable Turfgrass Management in Asia conference in Thailand. Dr. Han is heads the Institute of Turfgrass Science of Beijing Forestry University and is Director of the Golf Education and Research Center of Beijing Forestry University. He is currently President of the International Turfgrass Society.

Almost 200 delegates from 16 countries are already registered for the conference which is organized by the Thai GCSA and Asian Turfgrass Center on behalf of the Thailand Golf Association with support from The R&A.

Field Day Educational Sessions

Virada-swingAt this year's conference, the Field Day will be held at Siam Country Club's Plantation Course on the morning of 12 March, immediately prior to the AGIF Turfgrass Management Exposition.

The Plantation Course at Siam Country Club has recently been named the Best-Maintained Course in Asia Pacific, and the Old Course at Siam Country Club was the host of last week's Honda LPGA Thailand. After the morning Field Day and the midday Exposition, delegates will have the choice of taking a guided tour of the new Waterside Course now under construction, or of playing nine holes at the Plantation Course.

Virada Nirapathpongporn will be joining us to lead a practical seminar with Dominic Wall from The R&A about course preparation for a championship. As a former NCAA champion, US Women's Amateur champion, and LPGA professional, Khun Virada will be providing valuable insights into course maintenance from a player's perspective.

The Field Day will include a demonstration of the Greenstester and The R&A's Holing Out Test. This measure of putting surface reliability is something that all delegates will find of great interest. There will also be a session on bunker maintenance to discuss the best ways to optimize the playing conditions while minimizing the cost of maintaining these hazards.

AGIF Turfgrass Management Exposition at 2013 Conference

Agif_logoIn partnership with the Thai GCSA, the Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF) will conduct the inaugural AGIF Turfgrass Management Exposition as part of Sustainable Turfgrass Management in Asia 2013.

At past conferences, the equipment and product demonstrations have been some of the most interesting and informative sessions. With the introduction of the four hour AGIF Turfgrass Management Exposition, to be held at Siam Country Club on 12 March as part of the 2013 conference, these educational opportunities to learn about the effective products and techniques for turfgrass management will be expanded.

The Field Day program this year will start with two hours of practical sessions at Siam Country Club, on the topics of course preparation for tournaments, a demonstration of the Greenstester and The R&A Holing Out Test, and a look at bunker maintenance. Then comes the AGIF Turfgrass Management Exposition, followed by the option of 9 holes of golf with turfgrass managers from around Asia or a tour of the new course now under construction at Siam Country Club.

This is a fitting venue for the educational field day, turfgrass exposition, and a chance for course inspection by playing or by seeing how a new course is constructed, planted, and grown-in; Siam Country Club's Plantation Course was recognized as the Best Maintained Course in Asia Pacific in the latest Asian Golf Monthly Awards. You'll want to attend to see these conditions for yourself and to learn more about how it is done.

Planning for Sustainable Turfgrass Management in Asia 2013

Today I visited Siam Country Club with the president of the TGCSA for a planning meeting to discuss next year's conference, to be held 11 to 13 March at Pattaya. We are really excited about the 2013 conference, and full details and registration information will be coming in September. Some of the topics we discussed today and that we plan to include in the conference are:

  • more hands-on demonstrations of the latest turf products and equipment
  • a special session on the rules of golf led by The R&A
  • a more streamlined field day, with less bus travel, more shade, the option to play golf, and the chance to see a new golf course under construction
  • topics for the classroom seminars specially chosen based on delegate feedback forms
  • speakers from Australia, Thailand, and the United States will teach about effective maintenance techniques, plant nutrient requirements and fertilizers, irrigation, recovery from the floods that damaged so many courses near Bangkok in 2011, turf performance standards and what it takes to achieve them, and what equipment is required and how to use it to get the desired results on the course

At the 2012 conference we welcomed 197 delegates from 20 countries. In 2013, we look forward to welcoming even more golf course superintendents, turfgrass managers, club managers, and other industry friends to this premier educational event. Sustainable Turfgrass Management in Asia 2013 is organized by the TGCSA and ATC on behalf of the Thailand Golf Association, with support from The R&A.
